Some Useful Steps To Follow In Fabricating The Hot Rod Frames

By Frank Price

Hot rods are one types of old and classic cars which became very popularly used by the Americans in the older times. These cars have large engines and these are also being modified to have a linear speed. The origin of its remains unclear until today and there a lot of possible origins which may be accepted. One of it is the replacing of its camshaft which is a newer and a hotter version and which is also known as a hot stick or a hot rod.

Frames are one of very important parts in hot rods. So the purpose of writing this article is to provide you with the useful and easy steps on processing hot rod frames fabrication. Also, this article is about fabricating frames in a ladder type.

First is to start on cutting the frame sections. Do a sketch of the frame that you will make before going to the shop in turning your dreams into reality. Use the measurements that are in your plan in cutting the side rails and also the two elements of a rear kick up that is often called as Z. The tubing size will depend on the horsepower, amount of K and X member supports, and engine.

Second is creating a front frame horn. Horns may not be very necessary, but these can provide a more attractive look to fame rails. The purpose of frame shapes is for making the chassis to stand out from the typical corner square cuts of a tubing. For creating the horns, sketches and drawings of patterns must be done first using paper stocks.

In this case, you may be needing to an experiment first so that you can know that the perfect and correct proportion and size of tubing. Then after, you cut the pattern out and transfer it into the outlines of tubing. Cut the tubing with the use of a grinder with thin blade cutting wheels or metal bladed saber saws. For bending the top part of the piece, you may use clamps or some hammer works.

Third is assembling side rails. This will be the time where in side rails are being welded. To make the frames more stable, you can go beyond welding like using hidden gussets to reinforce the frames critical joints. One useful suggestion is hiding the gussets under the tubing for avoiding it to be slapped.

The next step is these hidden gussets will then be plug welded. Making sure that the rail sections are really true and square is important to be observed before doing plug welding. Plug welding is performed through slipping all sections together which are being prepared for those gussets. And another important thing is taking note of the measurements to match the length of sections.

Fourth is attaching cross members. Start by clamping together the side rails. Do this in order to scribe all matching lines which are used to position the cross members. After the clamping, mark all reference points since the marks are important for installing the transmission mount, front suspension components, and some other mounts and brackets.

Most of these ladder types usually have a cross member. These cross members may either be found on top and front parts of a frame. And normally, cross members double just as the transmission mount doubles.
