Basic Information For DMV Registration With Valuable Tips

By Frank Howard

Every vehicle owned or leased in the state requires registration and titling which is performed in the state Department of Vehicles. This agency manages all tasks related to automobiles in their place with their forms available online for you to complete and print before going to their office. ID card for insurance would be needed for coverage verification.

Other requirements the registration agent needs to see are proof of ownership, driver license and photo ID to prove your identity. Safety and emissions inspection before DMV registration NY is not needed but do this within ten days since applying. The results are submitted electronically so going back to their office is unnecessary for the applicants.

When this is your first time registering, bring all documents required with the application completed though online reservation is recommended. Auto dealers could do the registration, titling and issuing of plates for you with an additional fee. If they did not do it for you then take care of this yourself and bring all things required including the fee payment.

Fees vary depending upon your address and vehicle weight including other fees like sales tax which you could calculate using their online estimator. Money orders, cash, personal checks and most credit cards are accepted by them and splitting using cash and checks is possible. Registration services are identical for used or new cars.

New residents must register any automobile they have brought with them within thirty days but their previous registration in another state is valid still during this period. When the title from that other place was not named under you then provide the bill of sale to show transfer of ownership. If there is a lien then show your certificate with your name on it and lienholder letter saying your plans of registering is known to them.

When buying cars, get the title from their seller because you will be unable to acquire a regular one with your name on it without it. Their absence would make you unaware of their brand or designation that can devalue it for some thousand dollars. And if their loan was not paid off still, the lienholder probably has the title and would only release it when fully paid.

Inform DMV about any changes in your address within thirty days since you move to your new place to let you still receive notices, notifications and reminders from them. When selling them, keep the license plates because these were assigned to you preventing offices to think that you still owned that vehicle. You can instead use them with your new ones rather than buying another.

List the true selling price on a bill of sale because putting the false one is a crime and government agencies can check it with their fair value market for comparison. Anything written on your documents which are also false are considered a crime too. Consequences for this include fines and imprisonment.

Provide authorization letter when you let somebody else sign the documents for you. They will not issue the title unless there is an authorizing document. Ensure every document have proper signs before submitting them.
