There Are Many Different Ways To Junk A Car

By Martha Harris

One would be forgiven for thinking that abandoned cars are some form of bizarre decoration scheme along the highways and in the suburbs. They are everywhere and in many cases they pose a danger to children and animals. Many people do not realize that ownership of even an abandoned vehicle still remains the responsibility of the registered owner and these owners remain liable for anything that concerns such abandoned cars. There are better and legal ways in which to junk a car.

In order to get rid of an unwanted vehicle legally it is necessary to have the title deed at hand. This is the case even when the vehicle is completely wrecked. If the title deed is not available, applications should be made to obtain a copy from the relevant authorities. Even wrecks should never be sold without transferring the ownership because the registered owner will be kept liable.

Many people that want to get rid of unwanted vehicles simply sell them to the nearest junkyard. This is a quick way to go about it, but junkyards do not pay much for vehicles, even if they are still running. It would also be advisable to get offers from several junkyards before selling the vehicle. Care should be taken that the title deed is transferred when the vehicle is sold.

One way in which to make much more money from unwanted cars is to strip them and to sell the working parts separately. Even wrecks usually have many parts that are still in perfect working order. This route requires patience and some knowledge on how to strip the parts from a car. In these days of the internet it is easy to advertise parts online.

Junkyards often make huge profits by repairing cars that they have bought for next to nothing and selling them. By making such repairs before selling an unwanted vehicle oneself it is possible to earn much more cash. It is not always necessary to spend a lot of money to get a vehicle back into good running condition. A good profit is almost always worth a small investment.

Those who do not have the time to strip their unwanted cars to harvest the parts can still make more money by selling them to private buyers rather than junkyards. There are many people that cannot afford to buy an expensive car but that are willing to work on an affordable vehicle in order to get it back into good running condition. In certain cases there may even be collectors and restorers that would be interested.

In some cases the owners of unwanted cars are not really interested in cash. They just want to get rid of it. There are interesting solutions. These cars can be turned into safe playground toys. Artists have used them very creatively. They can even be used to create safe havens for fish in certain areas. Schools teaching mechanics may also be grateful for a donation.

If the authorities incur cost to tow away an abandoned vehicle, the registered owner will be held liable for the cost. Simply abandoning an unwanted vehicle is irresponsible and illegal. There are legal ways to get rid of them and in the process some cash can be earned.
