Key Factors When Selecting A Filter Press

By Virginia Peterson

Filter presses has become one of the most popular methods of dewatering tailings and processing. There are many factors to consider that people has been driven to purchase the equipment for their needs. Even though it has become widely used, it is still very hard to get new permits for new settling ponds because of the changes in permitting and regulation processes. To ensure that you purchase the right Filter Press for an application, take the time to do research.

Plate design. When the equipment was innovated a few years back, the design was simplistic which is composed of rectangular frames that is in between two solid plates with grooves or channels that will allow the liquid to be removed. Any solid material which is accumulated on the filtration cloths will be held between the flat plates and frames. When it is separated all the solids will simply fall down from the frame.

The contamination on the cloth will depend on many variables such as tackiness, makeup, abrasiveness, shape and particle size distribution of materials that is dewatered. The cloths will extend their lifespan if operators will keep a regular maintenance on it. There are many ways to clean the cloth so operators can choose the one suited for them.

Another option to keep in mind is open filtrate discharge. This option allows the operator to observe the cleanliness and quantities of waters that is discharged from plates. If the filter cloths worn or damaged excessively, dirty waters will exit from the presses and once its been detected, the operator will determine immediately the area of a damaged cloth.

In side beam types, it has an opening mechanism which is accomplished by a stroke of hydraulic compression cylinder or a separate opening mechanism which can be opened by a single movement. The plate is being attached with mechanical linkage or short chains which will allow multiple plates that will be opened in one movement.

Winterization is another problem that will pose a threat to many filter presses. Companies and producers that operates in cold temperatures must consider the cold climates to be a threat and can cause serious damages seriously. Even though the equipment is protected under roofs, freezing will still happen and will cause damage to the equipment.

A core blow is done by using sets of automatic valves which is connected into the feed piping. The slurries are being forced outside from the core hole with compressed air or pressurized water. The compressed air or water will be fed on one feed from the press and the slurries will be removed from the other end.

Individuals who wants to purchase filter presses must conduct some research first before purchasing one. Many companies and manufacturers are in this industry and each one of them are selling different equipment for various applications. You must determine the right one from different selections to purchase the right press for your application.

Budgeting will play an important role as well. Every machine has a different price and uses. You must call around the different manufacturers and suppliers to determine the right price affordable for your budget. However, keep in mind not to purchase the lowest price because it is being made by low quality materials.
